Diet
Your pets health will be affected more by the food you give than anything else you do. For this reason we have gone to a lot of trouble to find a food which is prepared using the best quality ingredients and backed by the most up-to-date nutritional research. To date, Proplan and Hills Science Plan are the foods which we have found to be recommended.
Regular health checks/vaccination
Your pet is ageing at five to seven times the rate you are. It is therefore imperative that we get the opportunity to perform a regular health check at least on an annual basis. At this time we can advise you on appropriate vaccination and healthcare needs.
Ongoing parasite control
Fleas and worms are constantly picked up from the environment and will infest your home whilst feeding off your pets. Regular administration, throughout the year, of an effective product such as Frontline will control the problem. Worms can be controlled with broad-spectrum products such as Drontal or Panacur.
Over the counter products can be less effective.
Processed commercial foods, especially soft tinned foods, encourage the development of plaque which becomes calcified to form tartar on the teeth. This leads to gum disease which in turn can further damage the kidneys, heart, liver, lungs and nervous system. We recommend several chews and regular teeth brushing (if possible). Please ask for advice.
One in four unsprayed bitches will develop breast cancer. This is reduced to one in eight hundred ( 1:800) if she is spayed before her first season. Spaying also reduces the trauma of seasons as well as preventing Pyometra (womb infection) which can be life-threatening. Spayed bitches very rarely develop urinary incontinence and can be prone to gain weight. Both these problems are relatively easy to manage.
Castration in males reduces the risk of testicular and prostatic problems. It can also help with male-orientated behaviour problems such as aggression and/or wandering.
A small (rice grain sized) microchip is placed under the
skin in the scruff is the most reliable means of positive identification and
ensuring lost pets are returned. It is obligatory, by law, on Mallorca.
